The mayor's office in Shivachevo recently won a grant through a nationwide competition, "Choose To Exercise", sponsored by Eurofootball in partnership with the Bulgarian NGO, "Workshop for Civic Initiatives", to renovate the town football stadium. The project was designed by English teacher, Pavlina Dukova, and a volunteer from the United States Peace Corps. The funding will provide electricity, water, and renovated locker rooms. With a functioning stadium, our school and community football teams will be able to hold practices and host intramural and league football matches. In addition, special town events, such as the annual town celebration (on St. Dimitar's Day, October 26th), folk concerts, and various sporting events will be able to be held there.
Our school has participated in the Comenius programme, bringing European countries together since 2007. Our project, entitled "Learning About Others To Know Myself Better", included schools from Turkey, France, Spain, and Greece. A delegation of students and teachers from our school have traveled to the partner schools in these countries and worked together to create a calendar and web site. We have now started a new Comenius partnership titled, "Education, Culture, History". Our partners in this project are from Iasi, Romania, Mardin, Turkey, and Kivioli, Estonia. The project will last two years and will end with a website and CD about the project activities. We welcomed our partners in Shivachevo at the end of October during the town celebration for a five day visit.
A United States Peace Corps volunteer has taught English in our school since June 2008. The Peace Corps has been active in English Language Education, Community and Organizational Development, and Youth Development in Bulgaria since 1991. In that time, 1,093 volunteers have served a two year commitment to their communities. There are currently over 140 Peace Corps volunteers working throughout Bulgaria.
